Bacteria called group B Streptococcus (group B strep, GBS) cause GBS disease. GBS bacteria commonly live in people’s gastrointestinal and genital tracts which usually are not harmful. Babies can be exposed to GBS bacteria during delivery.
Group B Streptococcus is a leading cause of neonatal and infant sepsis and meningitis globally. It is associated with maternal sepsis, stillbirths, and preterm births, and can cause disease in immunocompromised adults and the elderly, but the highest incidence of all is in neonates and young infants up to age 3 months.
GBS was estimated to have caused 319,000 cases of neonatal disease annually (2015), resulting in 90,000 deaths and at least 57,000 stillbirths. An average of 18% (with regional variation) of pregnant women carry GBS worldwide.
The BioPerfectus Group B Streptococcus Real Time PCR Kit is intended for the in-vitro qualitative detection of group B streptococcus nucleic acid in genital secretion and rectal secretion samples of pregnant women during the perinatal period (28 weeks of gestation to 1 week postpartum).
